What is Larping?

Best Larping Weapons of 2021
In case you don’t know what Larping is, or LARP, this stands for Live Action Role Play. In other words, this is when a group of people get together and play make believe.

In other words, a Larping session could involve two teams of people, with one side playing the French and the other the British in a simulated battle. Live action role play can take all sorts of forms, and yes, it can recreate real historical events, but generally speaking, these scenarios that people act out are completely made up and make believe.

Now, LARP is not the same thing as a historical reenactment, because like we said before, larping usually involves fantasy, or in other words, people may dress up like elves, goblins, orcs, and other such things, or even like characters from their favorite fantasy novels, movies, and TV shows, such as Lord of the Rings. Once people are dressed up in costume, they will then need their larping weapons to perform battle with, which can include things like swords, daggers, axes, bows and arrows, and all sorts of medieval weapons and fantasy weapons.

The aim of larping is to achieve a certain goal, complete a quest, defend something, or just to do battle and to slay your enemies. Live action role play is where you play the role of a make believe creature or person, and act as they would. There are some pretty big larping events out there that involve lite hundreds of people that form full size armies, complete with foam axes, swords, and more.

The History of Larping

Best Larping Weapons of 2021
What is interested to note is that technically speaking, larping has been around for quite some time, as realistically, games like doctor, house, and cowboys and Indians, all involved people taking on a specific role and playing out a scenario. However, those childhood larping games you engaged in usually did not have many rules and were generally just based on the surrounding culture of the time.

On the other hand, real larping, such as we are here to talk about today, is generally practiced by adults. Now, some would say that larping has been around for a very long time, particularly in the form of historical reenactments.

However, we have a bone to pick with this statement, because in historical reenactments, the ending is set, or in other words, the end is always the same (it is a historical repetition), whereas in larping, there is no set end, as people have free will, can choose their own actions, and influence the outcome. Comparing a historical reenactment to larping is like comparing professional wrestling to boxing (one has a predetermined outcome, the other does not).

Now, when it comes to actual larping, this really did not start until the 1970’s in the USA, and it is generally all about live combat. In 1977, the Dagorhir Outdoor Improvisational Battle Games group was founded in Washington DC. There is also the International Fantasy Gaming Society, which was formed in 1981, in Boulder, Colorado. When it comes to the USA, the UK, and the rest of Europe, there are literally hundreds of larping groups and societies. Larping groups can now be found all over the world in virtually every country, although besides in South Africa, Africa does not seem to be to much into it.

Why do People LARP?

Best Larping Weapons of 2021
Something that you might be wondering is why people actually engage in live action role play, because after all it really does seem like something that only children would do. However, this is the exact beauty of live action role playing that is adults can let loose, get rid of stress and immerse themselves in a fantasy world that doesn’t involve paying taxes and working a boring 9 to 5 job. It’s a way to escape from reality, a way to escape from the rigors of everyday life. Moreover, there are also just those people who are extremely into fantasy and who loved to play out various roles from their favorite fantasy novels and movies. At the end of the day, live action role play is just something really fun to help pass the time.

Weapons Used in Larping

Best Larping Weapons of 2021
What you might be wondering now is what sort of weapons are used in live action role playing. Well, as you could imagine, live action role play generally involved all sorts of fantasy and medieval themes. Therefore, you can assume that live action role playing will include various weapons such as axes, swords, short swords, daggers, knives, Spears, maces, bows and arrows, crossbows, sabers and more. More or less any type of manual weapon that you can think of. Existing is used in live action role play.

Now of course, with that being said, people are not going out there with real steel swords and chopping each other’s heads off because that would of course be ridiculous. Live action role play weapons are generally made out of foam. Live action role playing weapons used to be made more or less out of tape. Something like duct tape, but those weapons were not very durable and came apart easily, which is why they are now usually made out of foam.

Of course, foam is very soft and the modern ways in which these foam weapons are made does make them more than durable enough to use for these live action role playing purposes. Let’s move on and take a look at exactly how live action role playing weapons are made.

Sandwich Larp Weapons

Best Larping Weapons of 2021
The first way in which live action role play weapons are made is with the sandwich method. In other words, various foam boards are taken and cut to size and then glued in layers around a core bar. These layers of foam are then cut and shaped into various shapes that are supposed to look like weapons and are then coated with various layers of latex. The latex is then also painted and varnished.

This results in a semihard foam weapon that is somewhat durable. Now this type of live action role playing weapon is not quite as good as the next one we are about to discuss, but with that being said, this sandwich ty[e live action role playing weapon is fairly easy to make at home, and with some practice, you could make your own LARP weapons using this method.

Foamed Larp Weapons

Best Larping Weapons of 2021
The other way in which live action role playing weapons are made is by using liquid foam that is then poured around the core and into a mold. This foam then dries, cools and hardens. Generally speaking, latex is not used to code these weapons as it is just not required. But these weapons are usually still varnished.

The big time advantage of this construction method of live action role playing weapons is that they tend to be much more durable and they also are much quicker to make, not to mention far cheaper as well. Moreover, the result here is that this kind of live action role play weapon tends to be a lot more realistic and better looking. This is the method that professionals use.

Did you know that live action role play events can last for days on end, with people even sleeping in character?
